Too Much Vitamin D Could Harm Your Health

If we know the harmful effects of a lack of vitamin D, a Danish study also reveals negative effects for people who have too much.

Several studies conducted in recent years have questioned the effectiveness of vitamin and mineral supplements. Too high doses could even cause long-term damage to health.

A Danish study published in February 2015 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism1 presents a surprising result.

“We had access to blood tests of nearly 250,000 people in Copenhagen,” says Darshana Durup, one of the young scientists who worked on the study, “and if we found a higher rate of death among people with low blood pressure.”

Vitamin D level we also – to our surprise – observed a higher rate of mortality among those with a high level of vitamin D. Even if the effects are worse in case of deficiency than in case of overflow, the increase in mortality is no less real.

Too much vitamin D can cause signs of intoxication such as fatigue, headaches, irritable mood, nausea, constipation … The recommended daily intake varies between 0.005 and 0.020 mg per day depending on the country.

At doses above 50,000 IU / day (1.2 mg), vitamin D is a toxicant. It can then abnormally increase the level of blood calcium and lead to disorders such as kidney stones, bone loss, calcification of organs or convulsions …

US health authorities give 4,000 IU (0.1 mg) per day as the maximum tolerable dose of vitamin D for an adult. Some authors estimate it at 10,000 IU per day.

In fact, the risk of overdose is low with standard products containing ergocalciferol.
